Shawn Sim (Classical, Acoustic, Electric, Bass Guitar & Ukulele)
A well-qualified and inspirational educator with more than 20 over years of teaching experience in instrumental music, music history and music theory. Possesses excellent subject knowledge and a strong desire to provide students with high standard education. Adept at developing a culture of learning and high aspiration across a school’s music department, with end goals of raising the quality of teaching and stretching all my students to their fullest potential.
Shawn Sim studied music and majored in music performance in guitar at the University of Texas San Antonio, U.S.A. on a scholarship awarded by the University. He was involved in various mu- sical pursuits such as classical and jazz guitar ensembles, orchestra, jazz and concert bands, quintets (guitar, cello, violins, viola), guitar trio and guitar voice duet. He has also arranged music for voice and guitar, strings quartet, quintet and trio ensembles.
Shawn has been teaching professionally since 2003 and he is experienced with various teaching settings such as private music lessons, classroom, ensembles and rock bands. He has taught applied theory, music theory, history of music and stage performance. Besides music instruction, Shawn has also been actively involved in various music concert events. He was a conductor for Marlborough College Malaysia Senior Orchestra, Rock band coordinator, guitar and ukulele en- semble group.
He was also a conductor for a large guitar ensemble in college as a teacher’s assistant, a con- ductor for San Antonio Chinese Orchestra and has arranged music scores. He is well versed with other instruments besides the guitar, and has played violin in the Del Mar College orchestra, bass clarinet in Del Mar College concert band and tenor saxophone in Del Mar College Jazz Band.
Shawn’s musical achievements include being a honours competition winner at Del Mar College Corpus Christi, U.S.A. in 2008. In 2006, he achieved an outstanding excellent performance award from Trinity College Music examination in Malaysia. He is also a member of the Honours Society PHI THETA KAPPA and an Emily Brown Endowment Scholarship winner.
